SA TOURISM INDABA
The annual South African Tourism Indaba is one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and one of the top three ‘must visit’ events of its kind on the global calendar. It showcases the widest variety of Southern Africa’s best tourism products, and attracts international visitors and media from across the world.
For two years in a row, INDABA has won the award for Africa’s best travel and tourism show. This award was presented by the Association of World Travel Awards. Indaba is a four day trade event that attracts well over 13,000 delegates from the travel tourism and related industries.
An ‘indaba’ is an important conference held by the izinDuna (principal men) of the Zulu and Xhosa peoples of South Africa, such meetings are also practiced by the Swazi, who refer to them using the close cognate indzaba. These indabas may include only the izinDuna of a particular community or may be held with representatives of other communities. The term comes from a Zulu word, meaning “business” or “matter”.
There is one indaba that takes place annually in South Africa and is meant as a gathering of all those involved in the African tourism industry. The tourism INDABA is one of the top three tourism marketing events on the global calendar and most certainly the largest in Africa and it attracts thousands of delegates, visitors and media representatives from across the globe. This year, Indaba will take place from 7 – 10 May 2011 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre (Durban ICC).
Visitors and exhibitors at this years event will be exposed to an exhibition floor space larger than four soccer fields (27,000sqm) with over 7,000 items of furniture and 6,5km of electrical cable. 21,000 square metres of carpeted flooring will prove to be welcome relief for the more than 500 trained staff and students who will act as production hands during the event, anticipated to cover more than 15km each while servicing exhibitors, the production team and guests during the event. Indaba brings together a showcase of Southern African tourism products and services.
Exhibitors in the DEC (Durban Exhibition Centre) include provincial authorities and provincial products. In the ICC (International Convention Centre), exhibitor categories include accommodation, tour operators, game lodges, transport, online travel, media publications and industry associations. Outdoor exhibitors include transport, camping and safari companies.
